I learned a little known fact about what the phone service "gaurantees". According to the supervisor who visited me "Bell South only gaurantees 19K". I'm about to follow up on that statement since "being online" requires a heck of a lot more than that to function. The phone lines are supposed to be capable of 56K but no one expects to log on at that amount via a phone line but it should be around 50K and that is what I'm logged on at right now. During my "troubles" is was often down to 14K.
OK enough phone stuff already!
Knitty news:
Baby blanket #1 is done.......tadaaaaaaa.......
DD gave me the Knitting Calendar amongst other things for Christmas. I have yet to do any of the cool projects in it but hope to get into it very soon. I'll never get where I can do "one" a day though.
Baby blanket #2 is under way....this one will be a breeze compared the the first one.
Spinning news:
Not much, but have been "making rope". An artist friend, as in "painting and Native crafts of various kinds" was in need of some primitive looking rope. So digging into my bag of assorted fibers I found the bag of Chinese hemp and a little rough unknown wool from unknown animal. Carding a little of the rough stuff with the hemp did the trick and he left happy with the results.
It's pretty cool looking stuff and it definitely feels like rope. This will be used on decorated gourds. He'll have to quaduple it by twisting to make it thick enough but that's easy. I'll show you the gourd(s) when they are done.
I should have enhanced my stash last Saturday but due to an especially nasty migraine (of the "Cluster" variety) I missed the "River City Knitters" annual yard sale. Carolyn told me she made out like a bandit and I'm sure we would have arm wrestled for the "variety" pack of fiber she got for $5. It included qiviut!!!! Anyway I've since wondered whether the migraine was actually divine intervention to save me from myself....although a big booming "NO" would have done the trick....OK maybe not!
Oh, by the way.....thanks to all of you that encouraged me to wear the Mola Poncho! And thanks to the recent cold weather; I've been wearing "it"! True to your words, I've had lots of great comments and it's so comfy and just the perfect weight. It also goes well with blue jeans which is a big plus since they are about the only cold weather pants I own. So I'm going to make the most of Florida's few cold days of winter and "get noticed" :)
While rummaging through my sweaters (a rare event) I found "this" asleep in a drawer........
.........and "this" was knitted about 20 years ago. So, just to show it off again and brag that I didn't knit just one but two of them. My DSIL got the other. I hand knit it although it was a "machine" knitting pattern (btw, I'd love to find it again as it was a beautifully detailed graph capturing the cat poised on a window ledge reaching for the butterfly. If anyone comes across it and would part with it please let me know). I used a very fine cable spun cotton (sock/lace weight). I believe I used size 2 needles. It is worked "all in one" from cuff to cuff. The semi-dolman sleeves are coming back in fashion along with the "fully fashioned" look, so perhaps I'll find myself wearing it again.
The weekend of the 15/16th I visited Kathy (she's my knitty/civil war/demo bud'). One of the reasons for going was because I would catch her in her new hat and other "authentic" remakes. Unlike my sloppy renditions of period clothing, Kathy's are done exactly right. So though you've seen me playing at "dress-up" I thought you'd like to see the real thing. Just love the bonnet she made, and the 'head covering is pretty too. Thanks for modeling Kathy, especially after spending a whole day at the Civil War Camp.
Big Question:
Anyone out there familiar/skilled at weaving with a "card loom"? I'm sorta' "interested". Dangerous for me to even be thinking about it but it appears to be relatively simple and highly portable. Should I think more about it or stick with what I'm doing?
