Donna answered the baffling question of "what kind of shell" made my pretty "Diz". Seems it's "Abalone"! Now I need to hunt down more of those little darlings.
I had promised to show why a spinner needs a Diz, so here you are:
To catch up on my "doings". Last weekend I had a full and fabulous weekend at the "Barberville Pioneer Jamboree". So I dressed up in my new hat and pinny. Here I am testing out my wheel before setting all my other stuff on the front porch of the old log cabin. That was the only picture hubby took...he quickly left to enjoy his day there.
I don't know how many people attended this year but seemed like a whole lot more than last years 28,000. My weekend was spent right there answering questions. Then when I could manage it, I'd find willing kiddo's to help teaze some of this tangled mass of NZ long haired wool. As you see I almost filled two bobbins.
I'd won this pound or so of fiber at last years Virginia Sheep and Wool festival. How, you say? By by taking 2nd prize in the "Felting" catorgory with this knitted-felted bag which I'd based on a design from the "Ojibwa" Indians.
Thursday was "get ready for 3 week trip day". I'm not sure which I hate worse...packing or unpacking! At least when your unpacking you don't have the mental torment of "what to take". Since we were going by our son's home near Tallahassee as we head west and as I always have "stuff" to take to them I thought I should call and warn them we'd be by early Sat morning.
During this conversation I somehow I managed to convince my DDIL that taking our (home-schooled) 12 yr old DGD along with us wouldn't mess up her schedule too badly. And just think of the wonderful experiences she'll have and opportunities to learn.
First to Oklahoma and Hubby's family farm (no sheep or lovely fiber critters, only a gazillion cows. Then to BullHead City AZ to see her Uncle and Cousin. Must admit that BHC lacks the classic's in culture but interesting non the less. It does have an impressive Dam across the Colorado river...of course she'll see, from the outside, the Casino's across the river in Laughlin. We'll also see the London Bridge in Lake Havasu City. She has already been to England with me and so to see this bridge in it's strange surroundings (she's never seen deserts before)should amaze her. We'll then be going on to Phoenix and she'll spend Thanksgiving with her only, so favorite Aunt who she hasn't seen since she was six.
There should be lot's of opportunity to finish this shawl ( "Purly-Gurly" ...Free pattern) By the way, I did sell the "Cha Cha" shawl at the Jamboree for the tagged price....adding nicely to my fiber funds.
This yarn is tagged for the next shawl...and to keep me happy on the long trip home.
These are coming along with us, just in case we get bored.
Perhaps DGD will master one of these while away. The wool is part of a purchase I made on Saturday. Oh, so soft Corriedale...great bargain 1lb 11oz for $20.
I might also get a little more of this cotton spun on my easy to make Cotton Spindles.
I made them from 1/8 inch dowel, circular plastic canvas (yes there is a good use for that stuff), one plastic covered paper clip, masking tape and some smooth DK yarn.Instructions:
Cut 12" of dowel. Cut straightened paper clip in half and make hook on one end. Shave a 1" long flat side to one end of dowel. Lay straight edge of paper clip onto flat side and tape smooth.
Take the circular plastic canvas and cut through the center cross and trip rough edge. Trim outer edge down to the size of whorl you want. Ove- stitch the edges with the yarn...first over the very edge and then around again into the second holes. Push to position. I also taped under the whorl to hold it and my leader thread into place. They spin beautifully smooth and make spinning the short stapled cotton fibers sooooo....easy.
Most likely I won't get a chance to update (or read...sniff) again for at least another week,
Miss you already.
