1,015 miles later...

Key West and back home. We did most everything we had planned but the high seas messed with Dawn and Tims (dd and dsil) diving plans. They were both sea sick on the first boat ride to the wrecks they were diving. So they only did it that first day and scrapped the rest as the seas just got worse. So we went sight seeing in Key West one day and the Everglades the next.

If you are reading this and only looking for fiber news you should quit now as I didn't knit a stitch and this is the closest I came to any wool.

Key West has a great Tourist Trolley that enabled us to get on and off to see most of this beautiful 2 x 4 mile island.

After visiting the southernmost point of the USA and ogling the awesome homes and plants we then hit downtown and the shops. While in the middle of a market square, this old guy caught my eye as he was feeding a bunch of baby chicks. Then I noticed the ancient anchor behind him that is embedded in the coral with a tree growing around it. You can just see the eye of the anchor about half way up in the center of the tree.

A short way off shore is a barrier reef where ships wrecked on a regular basis, all helped by the local's who would disable the light house. Then there would be a "free for all" of the next shipwreck and take everything of value. They would then have a huge "flea market". During this period the inhabitants were the richest per capita, per city, in the whole of North America.

Now the ships can come right into the harbor and I've promised myself that my next trip to Key West will not involve the 100+ miles of a narrow two-lane highway from Key Largo with a zillion other cars and a 45 mph speed (like we'd be lucky to do even that). Of course everyone should do it once and it was the kids first time.

But next time.........I'll be aboard this!

We had a visit to Jimmy Buffet's "Margaritaville" set for the afternoon and boy were we ready for it. Bill was driving so only had iced tea but he could have had the Magarita's since the glass it came in must only have gotten shown the bottle of tequila. There wasn't a lick or a taste and definitely zero effect from the drinks....the lime and salt was good though :0

So Jimmy if you get to read this......your songs are good and your books are great but your bartending really stinks!

The trolley took us past Ernest Hemmingway's house. Thoughts of going in were quickly dismissed (feet and legs refusing). I think I got a good picture though, and the bike rider didn't spoil it either :)

As to our day at the "Everglades National Park", Bill and I had been before but hadn't driven down to "Flamingo" at the bottom of the glades on the "Bay of Florida". Anyway this time we did, but it wasn't really worth the time or effort. In fact the whole area is pretty boring unless you are into primitive camping. You can see far more animals and birds and especially the "river of grass" outside of the park...in fact, go anywhere between "Alligator Alley" and "Lake Okeechobee" for the best "taste" of the glades.

I've been home three days and still haven't knit/spun or anything creative. Oh I did do some work for the "History of Knitting" report while I was away.

Now I'm looking forward to Saturday as an old school friend who has been living in Canada since she was a teen is coming to see us. Fortunately she is bringing her hubby so my hubby will have someone for him to talk to, as he surely won't get a word in edgeways when Diane and I get cranked up.

Promising fiber news next time.....oh just remembered! I've been given another (raw) fleece...anyone want to come and play in the grease with me hehe!
